Hi my name is Karen, I’m a motorcyclist with a long-time dream of riding from Australia to London, the whole prospect of which is both exciting and scary. I’ve been riding motorcycles since 2001 firstly on scooters (Honda Spacey step through, Yamaha Majesty and finally a Yamaha Tmax 500 which I still own). I joined a touring motorcycle club in 2005, Clubman Tourers and toured with the club through the Victorian High Country on my Tmax. I had such a great time that I decided to buy a proper motorcycle and haven’t looked back since.
I’m the wrong side of 40, in fact the wrong side of 50, so I figured I had better take myself on a solo Australian adventure before my solo London trip to see if I’m up to it.
I was prompted to look at age demographics the other day when filling out an online form. I get really miffed when I find I am in the 2nd last age demographic on these forms. I’m not only in the 2nd last demographic, but nearly half way through it. I honestly start to ache all over the minute I click that button which displays my age as between 44-61, my uterus starts to shrivel, my boobs sag and I feel a nanna nap coming on.
Being part of the baby boomer generation used to be cool, now it’s just one click away from that final demographic (sigh) -61+- also known as the silent generation. eeeeeK! Facebook further engenders this image of my crumbling carcass by pitching ads at me;- Look 20 years younger, fix my thyroid and lose weight or my personal favourite, menopause gone in 24 hours! If only. And you know as soon as you move into the next demographic they are going to pitch Adult nappies or Alzheimer’s gone in 24 hours, hopefully I’ll still remember how to turn on the computer.
So to all the ageists out there, my body is over 50 but my head is currently aging in dog years.
I digress, this blog will be about my trip to Darwin, and hopefully I’ll be able to talk about adventures, people I meet and the beauty of the top end of our country. I hope you enjoy.
LOL.....I know how you feel !
ReplyDeleteHi Karen
ReplyDeleteElyse pointed me to your blog, it's good stuff!
There is properly waterproof bike gear out there. I wear Rukka, hideously expensive but it works. I always buy mine on ebay...
I look forward to further tales as you get ready for the BIG journey.
My wife and I went round the world for a year in 2001/2 and hired motorbikes/scooters all over the place. A Royal Enfield in India, a traillie in Thailand and scooters in all sorts of places including Cambodia.
More power to your elbow.
Jon Slade
Thanks for the post Jon, sounds like you and your wife had a ball. I'm heading south next month to Phillip Island with my brother to watch Casey Stoner win the GP;)
